BOONE COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

UPDATE: Boone County emergency dispatchers report traffic congestion on westbound Interstate 70 near Stadium Boulevard in Columbia because of a vehicle fire. It's not clear if the fire is related to the earlier crashes.

ORIGINAL: Two crashes within a short period slowed traffic on Interstate 70 just west of Columbia on Friday afternoon.

Boone County Joint Communications alerted drivers around 1:20 p.m. about a crash in the westbound lanes near the 122-mile marker. The Missouri State Highway Patrol asked drivers to avoid the area while crews worked to clear the scene.

The cause of the crash wasn't immediately available. A Boone County Fire Protection District spokesman said the crash involved two vehicles but no injuries. The second crash occurred a short time later at Sorrels Overpass. That crash involved three vehicles and two people were taken to University Hospital, the spokesman said.

Backed up traffic from the first crash led to the second crash, according to the fire district.
