Mediacom reports wide outages for second straight day

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Internet provider Mediacom reported widespread outages in Missouri and Iowa for the second day in a row Wednesday but said they were short in duration.

Medicom identified the outages a little before 4 p.m. Wednesday on the same network that caused Tuesday's outages in the same geographic area, a spokesperson said. However, the outages only lasted for 17 minutes -- from 3:28 to 3:45 p.m. -- the spokesperson said.

The company said it regrets that customers are being affected by an "unusual" issue that is disrupting internet service.

Spokesperson Phyllis Peters said Tuesday's outage was caused by a software bug on a Cisco router that was outside Mediacom's control. Engineers were able to initially fix the problem Tuesday but the software was not functioning properly Wednesday, leading to more outages.

"This issue is getting the full attention of Mediacom and Cisco engineering teams, and they are working to add replacement equipment in order to restore service as quickly as possible," Peters said.

"We do not have an estimated time for restoration of services. We know this causes more than a simple inconvenience to affected customers, and we deeply regret the situation. Please know that work is underway to restore network services as quickly as possible."

The website Downdetector showed a spike in Mediacom outage reports in the Columbia and Jefferson City areas starting at about 4 p.m., followed by sharp decreases in the number of reports.
