Three shootings reported in downtown Columbia since Jan. 1

COLUMBIA Mo. (KMIZ.)

Columbia experienced more downtown gun violence over the weekend amid scrutiny of shootings nationwide.

There have been a total of 76 shots fired calls so far this year according to the City of Columbia dispatch log.

The latest shooting happened Sunday outside of Harpos Bar and Grill just before 1 a.m. Columbia police confirmed two people were shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries following the shooting.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time there have been shots fired downtown. At the start of the year, there were four people injured in a downtown shooting near Ninth Street in downtown Columbia.

Following this incident in April, police made two arrests in connection with shots fired incident happening on Ninth and Cherry Street that sent one person to the hospital.

"It's definitely something that affects our community and our small businesses we'd love to do whatever we can to help them figure out ways to start correcting this," said Nicki Davis executive director for the Downtown Community Improvement District in Columbia.

Data pulled from the City of Columbia website shows there's been a total of three shootings downtown since the start of the year. All three shootings resulted in one or more people being hospitalized.

Nicki Davis says she hopes that once additional street lights are installed it will help deter crime downtown.

"They go up at 2 a.m. when bars let out, we paid for those about 90 street lights that were hoping to get installed and I think in all of these incidences they would have been very helpful if they were installed already," said Davis.

Davis also says she hopes to see more of a police presence downtown and she hopes to get a grant in place to install security camera's outside of small businesses.
