Missouri State Highway Patrol and other local law enforcement remind drivers to put down phones and be extra careful during increased traffic caused by the holiday weekend.
The Memorial Day counting period began Friday at 6 p.m., So far the Missouri State Highway Patrol reports 84 injury crashes since Friday night. Out of that number 10 of them were fatal 34 people got serious injuries.
"It's not necessarily important to get there quickly buts it's important to get there safely. Wear your seat belt statistically every year I've been on well over 50 percent of fatalities have been unrestrained," said Shawn Brazas who works for the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
During last year's counting period, Highway Patrol recorded 10 deaths and 442 injuries from crashes on state highways.
Brazas says distracted driving and tailgating typically contribute to an uptick in crashes out on the road.
"We work with a lot of crashes where um the distance between two vehicles is a factor so obviously whether it be internal or external distraction keep your eyes on the road," said Brazas.
