CALLAWAY COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Troopers arrested two people for felony drug trafficking after discovering 500 pounds of marijuana after a crash on Interstate 70 near the Callaway/Montgomery County line Wednesday.

The crash at the 163.3 mile marker of eastbound I-70 happened when a semi-truck swerved to avoid a crash and was rear-ended by a pickup truck, the patrol reported. Another tractor-trailer then went off the road and hit the pickup, according to a crash report.

Troopers said they arrived on scene and discovered 500 pounds of packaged marijuana scattered around the crash site.

David Mora Navarro, 24, Victor Gonzalez Acosta, 32, and Edith Daniel Lerma, 37, all of Mexico, each suffered moderate injuries. They were traveling in the pickup truck and Mora Navarro was driving, the patrol reported. Gonzalez Acosta was not wearing a seat belt, according to the patrol.

Their conditions were not immediately available.

Troopers arrested Mora Navarro and Gonzales Acosta for felony drug trafficking. Mora Navarro was also arrested for careless driving resulting in a crash, according to an arrest report.

The crash happened at about 7:15 a.m. and initially closed the interstate. The westbound lanes opened first, with the eastbound closure lasting several hours and creating a miles-long traffic backup. The Missouri State Highway Patrol said at about 11 a.m. that the road had fully reopened.
