Better Business Bureau warns against roofing scams

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

With the warmer weather and spring storms, Michelle Gleba with the Better Business Bureau is warning homeowners to be on the lookout for roofing scams.

"Roofing scams tend to be more common in the spring. You might receive a phone call or a person shows up at the door claiming to represent a roofing company. They often use the name of the state plus roofing or construction as their business name. The person will typically say that because they’re working in the neighborhood, they’re offering free inspections. But if you ask questions, you will likely get vague answers. If you accept the free inspection, they will show up at your house and lie about roof damage; create roof damage themselves; or show you fake pictures of roof damage," said Gleba.

So how can you avoid roofing scams?

"Be cautious of unsolicited offers. Keep in mind that most scams begin with a contractor who just happens to be in the area and notices roof damage. Before signing any paperwork with a roofing company, have your insurance company come out for an inspection to verify the need for repairs or replacements. And research roofing companies before you hire. Look at a company’s business rating on bbb.org and keep an eye on consumer reviews and complaints," said Gleba.
