Third juvenile detained in Columbia shooting that killed teen
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A third teenage boy has been detained in connection with a shooting that claimed the life of a Columbia high school student last month, police said Friday.
The boy, the third 16-year-old taken into custody in connection with the shooting, was taken in on suspicion of first-degree murder, assault and armed criminal action. He was detained in Peoria, Illinois and remained in custody there Friday, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Police released no other information about the case.
A girl was shot around 12:40 a.m. on Feb. 19 in the 1800 block of McKee Street, according to the police department. Police said the girl was taken to a hospital where she later died. Two other people were hurt in the shooting.
The 15-year-old victim, Aubry Doxley, was a student at Battle High School. A vigil in her memory was held last week at McKee Street Park, near her home. Nearly 200 people attended.
An informant tipped Peoria police off that the boy was in town, police spokesperson Semone Roth said. Police saw him go into a home Thursday night and ordered him out, and he came out "without incident," Roth said.
The McKee Street area has a history of deadly gun violence. In June 2020, a 16-year-old victim was shot at while riding his bike. In September 2019, a woman and man were shot and killed. In September 2017, a man was shot and killed.
Columbia police opened a substation on McKee in 2018 to address the violence. The substation is gone but police say they're still active in the area.
