JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Catholic bishop of the Jefferson City Diocese released a statement Friday urging the faithful to pray and fast for peace in Ukraine.

“An unjust war is never a solution to disagreement among nations," Bishop Shawn McKnight said in the statement. "The callous disregard for the sanctity of human life and the necessity of a just society scars the human family and wounds the souls of those who perpetuate violence.

“Let us join all people of good will in praying for a softening of the hearts of those who are inflicting so much suffering upon the citizens of Ukraine. We also pray for those in leadership, that they may have the wisdom to know how to build peace and the fortitude to persevere in their efforts.

“On Ash Wednesday, as we begin the holy season of Lent, we join with Catholics throughout the world in observing a day of fasting and prayer for peace.”

The diocese includes 106 parishes in 38 counties in central and northern Missouri, according to a news release. McKnight has provided guidance to parishes on including prayers for peace in their services.

NATO activated its response force for the first time in its history Friday amid reports that Russian forces were entering the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.

Thousands of Ukrainians have fled their homes as Russian forces have pushed farther into the country. Ukrainian officials have also referred Russia for war crimes prosecution.
