Missouri Task Force 1 members help assess tornado damage in Mayfield, Kentucky

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The members of an urban search and rescue team based in Columbia helped catalog damage to hundreds of buildings on their first day in Mayfield, Kentucky, the town hit by a devastating tornado Friday.

The members of Task Force 1 arrived in Mayfield on Monday. The team is based at the Boone County Fire Protection District.

The fire district said in a Facebook post that Task Force 1 assessed 1,054 structures Monday and was continuing its work Tuesday. The post included photos of the destruction in the small town of about 10,000. The tornado struck the town late Friday, killing several people. Kentucky's governor said at least 74 people in the state died in the tornado outbreak.

"The structures that were evaluated ranged from total destruction to no damage and everything in between," the fire district wrote in the post. "During these structural assessments, the team is not only looking for victims they are also evaluating the amount of damage to the structure and marking it with visible search markings and documenting the GPS location with damage symbols."

Maps are created using the data and shared with local jurisdictions.
