TUESDAY UPDATES: Missouri DHSS adds 132 coronavirus related deaths after analyzing death certificates

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has added 132 COVID-19 related deaths after the state’s disease surveillance system analyzed several death certificates.

Officials say the deaths will be captured and reported publicly through the dashboard Wednesday morning.

Of the 132 deaths:

  • Two in February
  • Two in May
  • Three in June
  • 13 in July
  • 112 in August

Officials at DHSS report the weekly activity typically causes a sharp increase in the deaths added to Missouri’s total the following day. DHSS is now regularly analyzing death certificates on Mondays.

Officials say the state does not track probable or pending deaths.

Deadline to enter the third MO VIP drawing Wednesday

The third of five drawings for MO VIP, Missouri’s COVID-19 vaccine incentive program, is this Friday, and the deadline for new entries is Wednesday at 11:59 p.m.

Nearly 600,000 vaccinated Missourians have entered the program for a shot at $10,000.

 “Getting vaccinated is the most important step we can take to protect ourselves from COVID,” said Donald Kauerauf, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services director. “Vaccinations are safe and effective. The choice for you and your children aged 12 and older to be vaccinated against COVID-19 is a personal one – but it’s so powerful for so many reasons. Choosing to get vaccinated not only protects you and your family but also contributes to the efforts of many to make Missouri a safer place to live, go to school and interact with others.” 

Gov. Mike Parson announced the launch of the statewide program on July 21. 

State-enrolled providers have administered more than 550,000 doses since the day after the launch of MO VIP. With state and federal vaccination data combined, more than 62% of the eligible population have initiated vaccination.  

Boone County reports four new coronavirus-related deaths, active cases up to 644

The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services is four new coronavirus-related deaths. That brings the total number of deaths to 145. The first individual was in the 60-64 age group and died Aug. 20. The second individual was in the 50-54 age group and died Aug. 23. The third individual was in the 80+ age group and died Aug. 25. The fourth individual was in the 80+ age group and died Sept. 1.

The county is reporting 156 new COVID-19 cases; 18 on Saturday and 138 on Tuesday.

There are currently 644 active cases in the county, an increase of 41 from Friday. The county now has a reported total number of 23,399 COVID-19 cases.

The county reported 22,610 cases removed from isolation.

Boone County ranks eighth in the state with the most coronavirus cases in total volume in the past week. Cases are down 1.3% on the week. The county has a 9.9% positive test rate, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

The health department's hospital status remains yellow, with 106 COVID-19 patients in Boone County hospitals and 17 of them being Boone County residents. Of those, 26 are in intensive care and seven are on ventilators.

The Missouri coronavirus vaccine dashboard reports that 101,824 residents have received their first dose in Boone County and 90,912 Boone County residents have completed their vaccine doses. Boone County has the largest percentage of county residents in Mid-Missouri that have received at least one dose of the vaccine with 56.4%. The second closest county in the state is St. Louis County with 55.5%.

Boone County is first in the state with a reported 50.4% of residents that have completed their coronavirus vaccine doses. St. Louis County is the second county in the state with 49.4% of residents have completed the doses for vaccination. The city of Joplin has 52.7% of the population fully vaccinated.

Cole County has the second-highest first vaccination rate in Mid-Missouri with 48.7%. Montgomery County is third with 44.5%.

The Columbia Public Schools reports active coronavirus and quarantine cases to their website daily.

At CPS, the district is reporting a 42.7 14-day rate per 10,000.

CPS reports 11 district facilities (two elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools and four other facilities) currently have staff out because of COVID-19. There is three staff at elementary, two staff at middle school, two at the high school and six at other districtwide facilities that have tested positive for the coronavirus. The district has five staff currently quarantined because of COVID.

The district reports 32 district facilities have students currently out due to the coronavirus. There are 19 out of 21 elementary, all middle and high schools and two districtwide facilities affected.

There are 69 students that have tested positive for COVID-19. The district is reporting 37 students in elementary, 12 students in middle school, 19 students in High School and one at a district-wide facility have tested positive for the coronavirus.

There are 316 students, which are required to quarantine due to the coronavirus. The district reports 169 elementary students are currently quarantining, 91 students in middle school and 53 students in high school.

Cole County reports 66 new coronavirus cases after Labor Day weekend

The Cole County Health Department reported 66 new coronavirus cases.

According to the dashboard update, there are 10,542 residential cases and 284 long-term care facility resident cases. That is 10,826 total cases in the county.

Cole County has the highest number of coronavirus deaths in Mid-Missouri with 146. The county did not report any new deaths Thursday.

Cole County ranks 42nd in the state for counties with the most coronavirus cases per capita in the past week. Cases are down 18.5% on the week. The county has an 11% positive test rate, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

The Missouri coronavirus vaccine dashboard reports about 48.7% of the county have initiated their first dose of the vaccine and 43.8% of the county's population have been fully vaccinated.

The Jefferson City School District reports three new coronavirus staff cases Tuesday. The district has four active coronavirus cases in students and six active cases in staff.

The district is reporting five close contacts for students and one close contact for staff.

Missouri adds fewer than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19

Fewer than 1,000 patients across Missouri tested positive for COVID-19 over the last 24 hours.

According to data from the Missouri Department of Health and Human Services, there were 934 new cases of coronavirus found through the use of PCR testing.

In total, 641,493 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Missouri since the pandemic started.

The statewide seven-day positivity rate also fell to 11.2% from Monday's 11.4%.

Five new deaths were added on Tuesday. Missouri has reported 10,660 total deaths due to COVID-19.

According to the state health department, more than 2.8 million Missourians have finished the coronavirus vaccination process.

That's 45.7% of the state's population.
