Several health organizations offering booster shots for immunocompromised

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Several hospitals in Boone and Cole County announced today they will be offering booster shots for the immunocompromised.

Boone County hospitals like MU Health Care, Boone Hospital and the Columbia/Boone County Health Department will be offering the third shot.

Cole County hospitals like Capital Region, SSM Health, Jefferson City Medical Group, Health Center of Jefferson City are offering the third dose.

Miller County hospital Lake Regional will also be offering a third dose.

Health experts recommend the booster shot for people that are moderate to significant immunocompromised such as transplant patients and those on immunosuppression medicine to keep their transplants from being rejected.

Experts are also recommending a booster shot for people in chemotherapy and those on high-dose steroids or other immunosuppressive medicines.

Health experts recommend getting the shot 28 days after and up to eight months after your second shot.

Margaret Day, MU Health Care Family Physician said at this time there is no guidance yet about a booster shot for Johnson and Johnson.

"For people who have received one dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine, even those that are immunocompromised, there is no current recommendation to get a booster," Day said

Health experts said if necessary people can get a different type of vaccine for their booster than they originally had for their primary vaccination.

"It is okay to interchange them, like to get a Pfizer vaccine after a primary Moderna series, but it's best to try to use the same product you used last time," Day said.
