Dew point pooling

At this point in time, it’s no secret that we’re tracking intense heat for Wednesday and Thursday of this week, but what natural process could cause such a high heat index for Thursday?

When we think of summertime, a lot of us think of pools. But have you ever thought about dew point pooling? I didn’t think so….let me explain what this process is and how it impacts us here in mid-Missouri.

Imagine that you’re cleaning a plate after dinner. When the sponge pushes the soap and water, it pools up against the tool. Now imagine that this sponge is a cold front and the water and soap on the plate are the heat and humidity at the surface.

As the cold front pushes into the heat and high dew points, they pool together just ahead of the front. We’re expecting those high dew points to come together Thursday as that front pushes into the area which could lead to even higher heat index values for mid-Missouri.

As you can see, Mother Nature has plenty of tools in her toolbox to give us different weather phenomena each day of the year, and it’s our job to track those tools. .
