Scherzer added to All-Star game as a replacement
WASHINGTON D.C. (KMIZ)
Former Mizzou baseball star Max Scherzer was added to the All-Star game on Saturday afternoon. He'll replace the injured Jacob deGrom on the National League roster.
The All-Star game will be played on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. from Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. You can watch the game on Fox 22, KQFX.
This will be Scherzer's eighth All-Star game appearance. The three-time Cy Young award winner is 7-4 with a 2.66 ERA this season. Scherzer is fifth in the MLB with 134 strikeouts.
Scherzer will be joined by fellow former Tiger Kyle Gibson in the mid-summer classic. This will be the first time two former Tiger pitchers will play in the same All-Star game. For Gibson, it will be his first career All-Star game appearance.
Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has also been named as an All-Star replacement in the National League. This is his tenth All-Star selection of his career. However, Molina has decided not to go to Denver due to a lingering foot injury. He'll celebrate his 39th birthday on Tuesday.
Molina's teammates Nolan Arenado and Alex Reyes will represent St. Louis in Colorado.
The Royals have another representative in the All-Star game as well. Whit Merrifield was named as a replacement in the American League. The 32-year-old second baseman leads the MLB in stolen bases with 24 at the halfway point.
Merrifield will join Salvador Perez on the American League All-Star roster. Perez will also compete in the Home Run Derby on Monday night.
