June monthly summary

The month of June was characterized by our first intense heat stretch of the summer as well as overwhelming amounts of rain to close the month.

June started out cooler than normal, but by the end of the first week, we were facing above average temperatures. From the 9th through the 20th, we saw temperatures well above normal with heat index values topping the triple digits some days. Luckily, conditions returned to near-normal values to close the month.

We got a slow start to rainfall through nearly the first 20 days of the month. Mother Nature, however, decided to wash us out by the end of June. We picked up nearly 11” of rainfall in Columbia, and we had several days with over an inch of accumulating rainfall. By the end of the month, we had the second rainiest June on record.

The Climate Prediction Center released their July outlooks suggesting that we can expect average temperatures and above average rainfall. Hopefully, all that rainfall won’t come in one week. Reporting for the Stormtrack Insider, I’m meteorologist Maddie Est.
