Jefferson City teen died in hospital after Thursday night car crash

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A teenager from Jefferson City has died after a car crash on Thursday evening.

ABC 17 News initially reported 19-year-old Cooper Smith of Jefferson City received serious injuries after the crash. The Missouri State Highway Patrol updated it's report to reflect it was fatal.

Smith was taken to St. Mary's Hospital with serious injuries after the crash east of Wardsville in Cole County on Thursday. He was then taken to University Hospital in Columbia, where we was pronounced dead just before midnight on Thursday.

Troopers say he was driving on Blackberry Lane when his 2019 Kia Forte went off the road, hit a trash can and a guide wire and overturned. Smith was wearing a seat belt, the patrol reported.

The damage to the vehicle was moderate and it was taken from the scene by a private party, the report says.

This is Troop F's 2nd Fatality for May and 19th of 2021.
