Police say a man was hit by gunfire Friday afternoon in east Columbia.

Officers were sent to the area of Orchard Lane and Callaway Drive for a shots heard call Friday at 4:30 p.m. and found shell casings in the street, a Columbia Police Department officer at the scene said.

Sgt. Patrick Corcoran said at the scene that they later found out a man was taken to University Hospital with a gunshot wound. The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, an officer at the scene said.

Officers blocked part of Callaway Drive during the investigation.

They did locate property damage to a vehicle.

Filex Olguin was travelling home around that time to find his neighborhood on Callaway Drive blocked off with police tape.

Olguin said his neighbor told him when he got there that it looked like two cars were shooting at each other.

He referred to his neighborhood as quiet and said things like this aren't common.

CPD records show Callaway Drive has has just 10 calls for service in the last year. Nearby Orchard Lane had 99 calls in a year including; two shots heard calls, two shots fired calls, one assault, and 22 disturbances.

No suspects have been identified in the ongoing investigation.
