Super Bowl LV features several Mizzou connections
TAMPA BAY (KMIZ)
There's a ton of Mizzou in Tampa Bay this week as the Tigers are well represented in Super Bowl LV.
You can watch the full story in the video player above.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was MU's offensive line coach from 1989 to 1991. KC special teams coordinator Dave Toub joined the Tigers staff the same year as Reid.
"I was there for 12 years total and had a great experience there, got great coaches to learn from," Toub said this week.
One of those coaches was Andy Hill. After 24 years on Mizzou's coaching staff, Andy Hill found himself in need of a job in 2019.
"Growing up in Trenton Missouri, he always had his eye on the Chiefs," Toub said.
The Chiefs hired him as their assistant special teams coach last year.
"Even if he has to shag balls for us or whatever it may be, he’s done a really good job you know high energy guy," Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker said this week.
The special teams connections don't stop there. Former Mizzou standout Yasir Durant is a member of the Chiefs field goal unit. He's also backup offensive lineman.
"He’s a monster, and he takes up so much space and we use him on our field goal team," Toub said.
Durant signed with the Chiefs after going undrafted this past April
"Yasir is a heck of a player," Chiefs offensive lineman Mike Remmers said this week. "That guy is enormous - that was kind of my first impression of him. I mean this is a big boy."
Toub added, "And he’s from Mizzou who couldn’t ask for better."
The Buccaneers don't mind Mizzou as well. Former MU quarterback Blaine Gabbert is Tom Brady's backup.
"It’s the ultimate goal to make it this far and have the opportunity to go to the Super Bowl," Gabbert said this week. "That’s all you can ask for."
Gabbert played for the Tigers from 2008-10. The Missouri native is now in his ninth year in the NFL.
The connections keep going. Bucs equipment manager Brad Berlin got his Bachelor's degree from Mizzou the same year Toub and Reid joined the Tigers staff, 1989.
"Brad is awesome," Buccaneers offensive lineman Ryan Jensen said this week. "They kick butt daily in practice running around spotting the ball, moving the chains."
The Marshall, Mo. native was Mizzou's equipment manager from 1998-99. Now, he's making sure the Bucs are good to go for Super Bowl LV.
