St. Louis area resident dies after Jefferson City officer-involved shooting
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
One is dead after an officer-involved shooting at a Jefferson City shopping complex Sunday afternoon.
The Jefferson City Police Department said it responded to a disturbance investigation Sunday, which led to shots being fired around 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Wildwood Crossings Shopping Center on the west side of town.
In an initial release, JCPD said one person was taken to the hospital. About 2 hours later police sent an update saying a 59-year-old St. Louis area resident died as a result of the shooting. Their name has not been released.
JCPD said because this was an officer-involved shooting, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is taking over the investigation.
ABC 17 News crews at the scene saw around six patrol vehicles. They also saw crime scene tape up in the parking lot of the center and evidence markers on the ground. Officers were taking photos of the scene.
A spokesman for JCPD said around 3 p.m. no further information would be given at the time.
ABC17 News also contacted MSHP Troop F, the agency now investigating the shooting. A spokesman did not have any more information to provide at the time.
One viewer told ABC17 News he was shopping in the area when he came across the investigation. He surprised by the amount of evidence markers at the scene.
Several businesses told ABC17 News they locked their doors and kept customers away from the windows, one manager saying they saw officials performing CPR in the parking lot.
Business resumed as usual while police were investigating.
