Missouri’s phased COVID-19 vaccinations could start next week

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Missouri will soon enter phase one of their vaccine roll out plan after the FDA authorized Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use.

The state says their plan revolves around three principles; vaccination, coordination, and communication.

The first phase of that plan will begin in limited numbers, before the end of the year. The state says the intent of phase one is to, "Reduce the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19 within Missouri while reducing healthcare system stress."

The first to receive the vaccine in the Show Me State will be healthcare and long term care workers.

Because of limited supply, the state will focus on those high risk and front line workers.

The next priority will shift focus to working with local and community partners to vaccinate essential workers like first responders and teachers.

Phase two of the vaccination plan is then expected to roll out in the later winter months and into early spring 2021.

The state says phase two is intended to secure the critical infrastructure of Missouri and accelerate economic recovery within the state.

Phase two also focuses on populations at a higher risk for contracting COVID-19. This includes, "racial and ethnic minority groups, housing-insecure individuals, people living and working in congregate settings, and other groups and other communities at higher risk of severe outcomes from
COVID-19."

As phase two ends, the state will begin to prepare to roll out the vaccine to the remaining Missourians who want it, in phase three.

Phase three is expected to come late spring 2021.

The plan calls for pharmacies and clinics to undertake most of the vaccination effort, providing vaccinations at no charge.
