University of Missouri police report sexual misconduct near campus

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The University of Missouri Police Department sent out a release Sunday night that stated a woman was harassed near campus.

According to the release, around 7:15 p.m. Columbia police received a report that an individual near Hitt and Locust Streets was approached by a man who grabbed their breasts.

The man in described as a male in his 20s with stubble facial hair. He was reportedly wearing a yellow zip-up hoodie, black shirt and black sweatpants.

Police say he ran west toward Hitt Street.

The MU Police Department offered the following safety tips:

  • Individuals should always trust their instincts. If an individual feels uneasy or senses something is wrong, they should do what they can to get out of the situation.
  • Have a companion or a safe means of getting home, i.e., a trusted friend, taxi or STRIPES if available. The MU Police Department is available to provide safety escorts on campus 24 hours a day. Call 573-882-7201. These escorts are not vehicle escorts and are provided by an unarmed security officer who will walk individuals to their destination.
  • Consider taking a R.A.D. Basic Self Defense class through MUPD.
  • Walk with others or make arrangements to leave a destination with others.
  • Check-in with a friend or family member and let them know that you are leaving/arriving so they are aware of any plans.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the Columbia Police Department or CrimeStoppers at 573-875-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
