A Florida man was pronounced dead after a vehicle collision Friday afternoon in Cooper County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Reports say 40-year-old Nicholas A Barbieri of Brooksville, FL, was driving eastbound on I-70 with a minor in the passenger seat when the car flipped near the 95.6 mile marker leaving Barbieri dead and the passenger with minor injuries.

Barbieri was allegedly attempting to pass a vehicle in the left lane when he traveled over the left side of the roadway, over corrected and hit the vehicle he was attempting to pass.

After the initial collision, Barbieri's vehicle traveled again, off the left side of the roadway, hit the median cables, flipped and hit several traffic signs.

The vehicle came to a stop on the driver's side facing westbound in the emergency crossover lane.

Barbieri was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:22 p.m. by the Cooper County coroner.

The minor passenger was transported by ambulance to University Hospital with minor injuries.

The other driver was not injured but had minor damage to their car.

This is MSHP Troop F's 9 fatality for September and 60th for 2020.

Next of kin have been notified.
