Bomb threat leads to lockdown at California R-I

CALIFORNIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Moniteau County Sheriff Tony Wheatley said a bomb threat was sent to the California R-I School District on Wednesday morning.

A Facebook post from the school district said it went on lockdown after receiving the threat. It will stay locked down until Monday, Wheatley said.

The sheriff said California police officers and his deputies responded to the school district.

School officials said in a Facebook message the threat was sent in an email to the middle school principal.

Wheatley said teachers in the building were evacuated and that no one was hurt. He added no students were inside the building at the time.

"It's unclear what the motive is," Wheatley said.

The school district said no school buildings will be used while the lockdown is in place. An elementary open house scheduled for Thursday will be rescheduled for a later date, the post said.

According to the school district's calendar, the first day of school is on Monday.

A bomb-sniffing dog was brought in to search the school but it didn't make an alert to any bombs inside the school, Wheatley said.

The sheriff added detectives have opened an investigation into the threat.
