MU plans community talks in response to complaints of racism

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

University of Missouri Interim Chancellor Mun Choi is promising students that leaders will take "important positive actions" following complaints of racism on campus.

Students created the hashtag "#BlackatMizzou" to share their experiences at the university. Students described incidents ranging from microaggressions to blatant racism.

Choi responded to the remarks Thursday in an email to students.

"Each tweet is a sobering reminder of the ugliness many of you have faced," Choi said in the email. "I have been discussing these comments with our deans, faculty and university leaders, and we are learning from the common themes shared while also looking into some specific cases mentioned."

Mizzou had posted to Facebook earlier Thursday noting there was much work to be done.

In the email to students, Choi said there will be "community conversations" in the near future to address the issues and propose solutions. Details on the planned talks are expected to be released in the coming weeks.

"I assure you that we will not stop pressing, and we will strive to spread the responsibility from those who have shouldered the brunt of the work to the larger community," Choi said in the letter. "Over the last several years we have done a lot of planning and created some progress and action. We all must do more."
