Stores in Mid-Missouri adjusting to new social distancing guidelines

Wal-Mart Entrance in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

ABC 17 News crews went out Monday to check in on grocery stores and how they're handling the new guidelines for essential businesses in Gov. Mike Parson's stay-at-home order.

That order, which went into effect Monday, specifies that any store under 10,000 square feet must maintain at 25% of their capacity. Any store over that, must maintain at 10%.

Both Hy-Vee and Wal-Mart had their entrances roped off with staff out front, in an effort to be able to monitor all those entering and exiting the stores.

Target also had signs on its front doors informing customers of the new guidelines. On top of the instructions spelled out by Parson's order, many of these chains are implementing social distancing restrictions of their own.

Wal-Mart will only use one entrance in their stores, again in an effort to monitor how many people go in and and out at a time. One customer spoke with ABC 17 and said he was able to find everything he needed in the store.

Hy-Vee will be implementing a strict one cart per shopper policy, trying to prevent multiple people from the same family from shopping together. They have also installed temporary window panels at their cash registers

Target has said all of their stores will limit who enters based on the square footage of those stores. Crews also saw signs inside, instructing shoppers to keep six feet apart.
