AUDRAIN COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

One lane of Highway 22 was closed just east of Centralia on Tuesday after part of the bridge deck collapsed.

The collapse happened over the Youngs Creek Bridge just over the Audrain County line, the Centralia Police Department said. Multiple people called in to report the hole in the 67-year-old bridge Tuesday morning.

The Missouri Department of Transportation responded to the incident. It was unclear when the repairs would be finished.

“As pavement expands and contracts, especially when moisture gets in the roadway, it can cause damage to the integrity of the road and bridges,” said MoDOT Northeast District Engineer Paula Gough. “Our crews will work safely and quickly to make the needed repairs and get traffic moving on both lanes as soon as possible.”
