One person dies after Jefferson City fire

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Eighteen firefighters with the Jefferson City Fire Department responded to a residential fire in the 1000 block of Laurel Drive Sunday.

They were dispatched around 6:12 p.m.

Upon arrival firefighters found heavy fire coming from the front side of the structure.

Matt Schofield with the fire department said there were flames on both floors of the residence.

"There was one occupant transported to the hospital," Schofield said.

The chief of Cole County Emergency Medical Services later confirmed one person, a died while en route to University Hospital.

Firefighters were able to get a pet out of the fire and relocated to a shelter.

Ameren also reported to the scene to turn off gas in the residence.

The department is still investigating the cause of the fire.

"Early indications show that it may have originated in the kitchen area and that the stove may have been involved," Schofield said.

Schofield said firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire but had to continue to work to make sure the fire was fully extinguished.

The department is expected to release more information at a later time, Schofield said.
