Free sober rides being offered for New Year’s Eve

Businesses are lending a hand in getting people home safe this New Year's Eve in Columbia and Jefferson City.

Alcohol distributor Major Brands created a social responsibility program to help get people home safely. The Safe Home After Every Occasion is a plan-ahead service that secures a ride home before any alcohol is consumed.

Checkered Cab is accepting vouchers from almost all bars in Jefferson City. People can use the voucher for a free ride home up to $10.

Checkered Cab said it's advised to call 30 minutes in advance to keep from waiting for your ride to come.

CHEERS is another organization helping with the holiday. According to CHEERS bars, restaurants and nightclubs participating provide free non-alcoholic drinks to designated drivers.

According to Uber, 6 to 11 p.m. is when riders begin their celebration and between midnight and 4 a.m. was the busiest time to end New Year's celebrations for most last year.
