Cole County prosecutor charges man with child abuse

The Cole County Prosecutor’s Office has charged a man accused of hurting a toddler with child abuse.

Darrion L. Dowdy, of Jefferson City, is charged with abuse or neglect of a child, first-degree domestic assault and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

Court documents obtained by ABC 17 News reveal a 2-year-old boy was flown to a hospital in St. Louis with serious injuries Oct. 1 after he was left Dowdy for about two hours.

Police said the child’s mother found the boy lethargic and vomiting when she came back to the home off Fairmount Boulevard.

The toddler was still listed in critical condition Oct. 4 after receiving surgeries for injuries that included trauma to his spleen, perforations to his small intestine and a broken rib.

Dowdy was out on parole after he pleaded guilty in March to drug delivery charges and was sentenced to seven years in prison, according to the probable cause statement.
