Columbia man believed to have fled to Iceland in custody

A man accused of several felonies who was believed to have fled to Iceland to avoid prosecution was booked into the Boone County Jail on Sunday.

Jay Paul Robinson, 43, was transported from the Cook County Jail in Chicago to Boone County, according to Detective Tom O’Sullivan of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department. Records show Robinson was booked into the jail around 6 a.m.

O’Sullivan said they do not know when or where Robinson was arrested before being booked into the Cook County Jail. He also said they do not know which agency executed the arrest.

Robinson was arrested Aug. 3, 2018, after police say he exposed himself and hid a camera in a bathroom of a public library.

In a federal complaint filed in January, prosecutors said Robinson fled the country to Iceland after the August arrest to avoid prosecution. According to prosecutors, Robinson flew from Chicago to Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, on Aug. 5.

Robinson is accused of several other crimes, including sodomy and rape. According to the Boone County Jail website, Robinson is being held on no bond.
