Man convicted in Black & Gold Tavern shooting set to be released
An Orrick man who pleaded guilty to shooting another man last April near Columbia’s Black & Gold Tavern, is now set to get out of jail on April 13 , after completing a 120-day shock incarceration.
The court originally sentenced Miles Hillegas to seven years in prison after he pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon, both felonies. Hillegas told the court he shot another man behind the Columbia bar on April 26, 2018. Authorities will place Hillegas on probation for five years after his release.
Hillegas was a student at the University of Missouri at the time of the shooting.
Court documents said the victim walked out of the Black & Gold Tavern to tell two people to leave the property. Hillegas armed himself with a sledge hammer and started swinging at the victim, according to the documents.
Hillegas then got in his car and tried to run over the victim who started walking toward the business to go inside. Documents say the man looked back at Hillegas ‘ who shot him in the right thigh.
Authorities arrested Hillegas in Ward County, Texas.
