UPDATE 7 a.m.: Columbia fire crews at the scene said it is the department’s understanding that no one was home when a house caught fire early Sunday morning in southwest Columbia.
Officials said a neighbor called in the house fire around 4:03 a.m. when they saw flames coming from the roof of the house.
Fire officials said when the first crews got to the scene the house was 80 percent involved and crews made their way through the remaining 20 percent to see if anyone was home. They said they didn’t find anyone and there were no cars in the driveway or garage, so they don’t believe anyone was home.
A neighbor told ABC 17 they didn’t believe anyone was home either.
Ten units from Columbia Fire responded to the call.
It took one hour to get the fire under control and it was out around 6 a.m.
