Brief warming and rain; arctic air returns
TONIGHT: As low clouds remain in place, southeast winds will be breezy overnight at 14-18 mph and temperatures will gradually rise. By morning, areas south of I-70 will be above freezing but areas north will stay at or below freezing through daybreak.
TUESDAY: As the warmer air moves over the cold surface in the early morning, freezing drizzle could develop north of I-70 where temperatures are still close to freezing. By late-morning, areas will be above freezing, warming into the lower 40s in the afternoon as rain moves in. Expect a wet afternoon and evening commute with south winds gusting to 25 mph at times.
EXTENDED: As colder air move in, we could see a brief changeover to snow Tuesday night as a cold front works through the region, but by then, the bulk of the moisture will be moving out. At best, we’ll only pick up a dusting of snow. We’ll see a mix of sun and clouds Wednesday as temperatures fight to make it back to freezing in the afternoon. A cold front swings through on Thursday, giving us a slight chance of snow in Mid-Missouri and pushing temperatures back into the single digits overnight Thursday. A northwesterly air flow aloft will drive upper level waves and reinforcing shots of arctic air into the region from Friday through next Monday. With these, brief periods of light snow are possible but moisture will be limited. If snow does develop with any of these waves, it would be light with only minor accumulation. We will stay below freezing from Friday through next Monday with days in the 20s and nights in the teens. Stick with ABC 17 on-air and online for the newest information.
