Major winter storm through Saturday

TONIGHT: Moderate to heavy widespread snowfall continues overnight as temperatures drop into the upper 20s to just below freezing. Total snow amounts of 8-12 inches are expected with lowest totals west from near HWY 65 to Kansas City and higher amounts east of HWY 63. Some accumulation in our eastern counties could rise well over a foot”. Visibility will continue to be reduced through the night, but luckily blowing snow won’t be much of an issue with winds out of the east up to 10 mph.

SATURDAY: Steady snow in the morning will turn to snow showers in the afternoon and continue through Saturday night, becoming lighter in the evening and gradually tapering off from west to east to snow flurries by Sunday morning. During the day Saturday, snow will turn back to rain close to I-44 and areas south but most of Mid-Missouri will see all snow. High temperatures will range from near 30 north of I-70 to the lower 30s near I-44 with an easterly breeze up to 10 mph.

EXTENDED: Low will drop into the upper 20s Saturday night with winds shifting to the north up to 12 mph as snow flurries continue. Wind chills will dip to near 20 by Sunday morning with snow flurries turning to freezing drizzle before ending. Sunday will still be cold, reaching the mid 30s with mostly cloudy skies. We’ll slowly warm next week, reaching the mid 40s by Tuesday. Another cold front drops in Wednesday, cooling us back into the 30s to near 40 by next Thursday. At this time the moisture looks limited with this front but some very light rain or wintry mix can’t be completely ruled out late Wednesday. Another storm system for late next week will bring a chance of rain Friday with highs in the lower 40s.
