Chief: Moberly killings not random
Moberly’s police chief said Monday the public has nothing to fear after two men were found dead in a vehicle outside a bar over the weekend.
“We don’t believe it was random, they didn’t pick them out of a crowd and decide to do this,” Chief Troy Link said.
Moberly police are continuing to investigate after Darren Stacey Tharp, 51, and Shane Austin Hare, 24, died from gunshot wounds and their bodies were found in a vehicle in the 600 block of Concannon Street on Saturday morning. Autopsies were to be performed Monday.
Link said police are working around the clock to find out who killed Tharp and Hare.
“We’ve had officers, detectives, and even myself out checking addresses until 4 a.m. Sunday morning,” Chief Link said.
He said police have requested data from social media and cellphone companies as part of the investigation.
A spokeswoman for Hare’s family, Teylor Cain, said the news of his death was devastating.
“It’s really hard on the family to get through this because they all loved each other so much and they’ve been so close for so long,” Cain said.
Hare’s step-mother released the following statement:
“His dad and myself are at a loss for words on how this could happen. I hope they catch the people who did this. He was only 24 and had his whole life ahead of him.”
Moberly police released the men’s names Monday morning after saying little about the double killing throughout the weekend.
The bodies were discovered outside the bar Bud’s Place. Bartenders told ABC 17 News their security footage showed the men had been inside the car since early Friday, but police have not confirmed that information.
The Moberly Police Department has not said what might have precipitated the killing.
Shane Austin Hare’s family is collecting donations at Bud’s Place for funeral services.
