Teenager arrested after police chase ends in Jefferson City

A teenager has been arrested and charged in a high-speed police chase that started in Moniteau County and ended in a crash in Jefferson City.

Ariyan T. Akins, 17, of Jefferson City, has been charged with felony resisting arrest by fleeing. She was being held Friday in the Moniteau County Jail on a $25,000 bond.

The chase began Thursday afternoon when deputies were sent to a call of a careless driver traveling east on Highway 50 from the Syracuse area, the Moniteau County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The vehicle was reportedly traveling at more than 100 mph and passing cars on the shoulder, the release said.

Deputies were able to get behind the vehicle near California and paced it at speeds of more than 130 mph, according to the release. The pursuit continued into Cole County and Jefferson City, where the vehicle hit another vehicle and then lost control and crashed at Highway 50 and Missouri Boulevard.

Akins was arrested immediately. The sheriff’s office said it found marijuana and drug paraphernalia after the crash.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Jefferson City police said Thursday.
