Fulton police arrest two after finding drugs during traffic stop

Fulton police said they took two people into custody near William Woods University after they found drugs during a traffic stop Sunday morning.

Officers said they pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation near William Woods Avenue and Dunham Drive around 1 a.m.

Police said they found the passenger, Yashim Smith, 40, of Columbia, with cocaine, methamphetamine, various types of pills and items related to the distribution of the drugs.

Smith originally gave his brother’s name to officers, according to a Fulton Police sergeant.

The sergeant said that Smith gave the false identification because he had two warrants for his arrest out of Cole County, one of which was for no bond.

Officers said the driver, Elmer Jackson, 45, of Jefferson City, had several warrants for his arrest for not showing up to court.

Smith was arrested on charges of delivery/distribution of a controlled substance and four counts of possession of a controlled substance. Smith will also face charges of forgery.

Jackson was taken into custody for the warrants for his arrest.

Police say both were taken to the Callaway County Jail.
