Suspended MU football player charged
Mizzou defensive end Tre Williams was charged with second-degree domestic assault on Sunday, and the court documents were released on Wednesday.
This comes a day after Boone County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Susan Boresi told the Missourian the former Rock Bridge standout will not be charged.
ABC 17 News has reached out to Boresi multiple times, but has not heard back from her yet.
Prosecuting Attorney Dan Knight said “The case involving Tre Williams has not been dismissed. Because this is a pending case, no further comment will be made by this office at this time.”
An MU spokesman said Tuesday night nothing has changed in regards to Williams’ status with the team. He remains indefinitely suspended from the program.
The former Rock Bridge Bruin was arrested on Sunday morning on suspicion of second-degree domestic assault.
According to court documents, Williams was in the car with a woman with whom he was in a relationship when the two allegedly got in an argument. It happened at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Sunday in the 3900 block of S. Providence Road. The victim was driving the car at the time, and she told police Williams became physically aggressive, trying to grab the steering wheel and crash the car.
The victim said Williams kept hitting her multiple times with his elbow and slapped her in the chest, court documents said. The victim said she then threw Williams’ phone out of the car, and when he got out of the car to retrieve the phone, she grabbed the phone and closed the door. Williams then reached through the open window of the car and allegedly began choking her with both hands, the documents said.
The victim was able to drive away from the scene but told police she feared for her life. Officers found swelling to the victim’s throat, consistent with being strangled.
“We were made aware of the situation yesterday, and Tre was immediately suspended indefinitely from all team activities. We will provide an update if his status changes,” Odom said on Monday.
Williams is a redshirt sophomore for the Tigers. The former Rock Bridge football standout played in all 12 regular season games for Mizzou, totaling 2.5 sacks and five tackles for loss.
Williams’ first court date is set for Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 1:30 p.m.
