New police substation to be named after fallen police officer

The Columbia Police Department’s new substation in north Columbia will be named after a fallen police officer.

Columbia Mayor Brian Treece proposed naming the building the “Molly Bowden Neighborhood Policing Center” at the city council meeting Monday night.

The council unanimously approved the proposal after Treece spoke in support of the idea.

“I think naming this facility goes a long way to enhance morale,” Treece said. “I think it enhances recruitment, to remind people officers come in all shapes and sizes.”

Treece also suggested removing the word north from the name.

“I think by de-emphasizing and eliminating the word north it kind of eliminates the suggestion we are doing geographic policing here,” Treece said. “I think changing it from the north precinct also de-emphasizes the perception of this over militarization of police.”

Third Ward Councilman Karl Skala also spoke in support of the proposal.

“What I really like about this is, it’s not only the memorial to Molly Bowden, but it’s also a reminder that we’re talking about neighborhood policing,” Skala said. “That’s important and I think it’s a legacy I think that her family can be proud of, as well.”

Officer Molly Bowden was shot during a routine traffic stop in 2005. She later died of her injuries.

Treece said he reached out to Bowden’s parents to make sure it wouldn’t be a difficult reminder. Treece said they were humbled and honored by the opportunity.

The substation will be located at International Drive and Rangeline Street.
