Man accused of stealing county funds out on bond

A New England man arrested on charges of defrauding Boone County for more than $46,000 has been released on bail.

Kamal Mardi posted a $50,000 surety bond Thursday and was released from the Boone County Jail, according to court records. He was brought to Boone County from Massachusetts on Nov. 15 to face the charges, which were filed in June.

Mardi was initially jailed on a $50,000 cash-only bond, but that was reduced to $50,000 cash or surety Monday, court records show.

Mardi is accused of using a local company’s information to trick staff in the Boone County Treasurer’s Office into sending money to an account he controlled.

Mardi’s defense attorney, Kevin O’Brien, filed a motion Friday for a special prosecutor. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Jan. 8.
