Family, search volunteers react to arrest following boy’s death
The family and volunteers who searched for Darnell Gray, whose body was found by police Tuesday, were shocked by the arrest of his caregiver.
Quatavia Givens was arrested and charged with child abuse resulting in death Tuesday, after spending days with volunteers during their search for the boy she allegedly injured.
“I was loss of words, I didn’t know what to say. I just bawled my eyes out,” said Rebecca Bell, one of the volunteers who searched for Darnell for several days. “Our whole team trusted you and you let us all down.”
Darnell’s father, Kijuanis Gray, told ABC affiliate WLS in Chicago that he left his son with Givens while he was visiting family in Chicago. Givens and Gray were dating at that time.
“I trusted her to watch him, but I didn’t expect her to do this to him,” Gray said.
Darnell’s body was found hidden in the area of the 2100 block of Louis Circle with multiple blunt force and stabbing injuries.
