Columbia man sentenced to six years for involuntary manslaughter

Jeremy Humphrey, who pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in September, was sentenced to six years in prison Monday.

According to court filings, Humphrey was sentenced to six years for involuntary manslaughter and four years to unlawful possession of a firearm, which will be served consecutively.

Humphrey was initially charged with second-degree murder in addition to the weapon charge in the killing of Nathan Taylor in the 1800 block of McKee Street. Court records say witnesses told investigators Humphrey was involved in the murder and saw the same style truck he’s known to drive at the scene shortly before the shooting.

Another man, Jamale Marteen, was charged with evidence tampering for allegedly deleting a text message from Humphrey. His jury trial is scheduled for next month.

Humphrey was arrested during a traffic stop a few days after the shooting. Investigators said they had determined Taylor and Humphrey were in an argument before the shooting.
