UPDATE: Columbia police identify victim in homicide investigation on Rice Road

Columbia Police have been dispatched to Rice Road for calls of gunshots heard or fired 10 times in the past three months.

UPDATE 9 a.m.: Columbia police have identified the victim in the homicide investigation on Rice Road.

Police said they got a call for shots heard around 12:16 a.m. When they arrived at the 4700 block of Rice Road, they found that Charles Hayes Jr., 59, of Columbia, had been shot.

Hayes was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they do not have any suspect information. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Columbia Police Department or CrimeStoppers at 573-875-TIPS to remain anonymous.

ORIGINAL: Columbia Police confirm a homicide investigation is underway on Rice Road.

Police were called to the area of Rice Road and Ballenger Lane around midnight Saturday, for a shots fired call.

When police got to the scene they found a victim with a gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police told ABC 17 News that they don’t have a suspect description at this time.

The departments forensics unit and detectives continue to investigate the scene.
