Man convicted in 2016 Mizzou rape case expected to be sentenced Thursday

On Thursday morning, Austin Campbell, 21, of Springfield, is expected to find out how long he will be in prison.

Campbell was convicted in August for raping a victim in her Mizzou dorm room in 2016. Campbell was a freshman at the university at the time.

Campbell’s first jury trial in the fall of 2017 ended in a mistrial.

According to Mizzou’s 2018 Fire and Safety Report, Campbell was one of 22 reported rape cases at the university in 2016.

The number of reported rape cases at the university decreased in 2017, but the number of reported fondling incidents increased.

The report also shows that from 2015 to 2017, the majority of reported sexual assault cases happened on campus, versus off campus.

Campbell’s sentencing hearing is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at the Boone County Courthouse.
