Man tased, arrested after threatening police with knife

Columbia police arrested a man around 8:30 p.m. Thursday night after they said he was acting belligerently with a knife.

According to the Columbia Police Department, officers responded to Break Time on Nebraska Avenue after they received calls of a disturbance.

When they arrived, they said the suspect was yelling at customers and pulled out a large knife, about 12 inches long. He then told officers he was not going to jail and repeatedly told officers they would have to shoot and kill him.

The suspect ignored commands to drop the knife, and officers attempted to tase him but were unsuccessful due to the suspect’s loose fitting clothes. Officers also used “O.C.” spray, and the suspect turned away and ran across Providence Road into the parking lot of Joe Machens Nissan.

Officers were eventually able to successfully tase the suspect successfully and took him into custody. He was arrested for assault, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest.
