Sheriff’s department number used in phone scam

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department is warning the public about a phone scam in which the caller poses as a deputy.

The department has been receiving calls from people in other states reporting the scam, in which a caller identifies themselves as a deputy and asks for money to post bond for a jailed, injured relative, the department said in a news release. The caller is able to manipulate the caller ID to make it appear the call is coming from the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, a practice known as “spoofing.”

So far no one has reported falling for the scam, the department said.
