Infant safe after armed Maries County man barricades himself in 6-hour standoff

The Maries County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and Missouri State Highway Patrol concluded a 6-hour standoff Friday morning after responding to a domestic disturbance call involving an armed man who barricaded himself with an infant.

The sheriff said deputies responded to the call around 10:30 p.m. Thursday. When they got to the scene, deputies found an adult woman and juvenile outside a Maries County residence saying the man had barricaded himself in the child’s bedroom with a handgun.

Once deputies confirmed where the man was located in the house, they set up a perimeter with a sniper while two SWAT supervisors entered the home.

The supervisors were able to establish a connection with the man, and after six hours of negotiations, were able to convince the man to release the infant to a family member.

The man turned himself over to be transported to a psychiatric treatment center.

The sheriff said the scene was cleared by 5 a.m. Friday.

The sheriff sent a special thanks to the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Marshal Joe Turnbough. He said the outcome showed what dedication the Sheriff’s Office has to the safety of all citizens and to the training of their deputies.

More information will be released once charged are filed.
