MU strategic plans include increasing graduation rate, doubling research

The University of Missouri plans to increase graduation rates by 5 percent and double research expenditures in the next five years.

That’s according to the strategic plans outlined by Chancellor Alexander Cartwright at the UM Board of Curators meeting Thursday in Kansas City, where curators approved strategic plans for each of the four universities.

Additional goals for MU include:

Increase number of undergraduate, graduate/professional degree program and graduate credential completions to 10,000 by 2023 from 9,279 in 2018 Increase six year graduation rate to 74 percent in 2023 from 69 percent in 2018 Double federal and industry research expenditures to $413.2 million in 2023 from $205.4 million in 2018 Increase first-year undergraduate student retention to 93 percent by 2023 Build on a culture of career graduation to ensure that 95 percent of of undergraduate/graduate professional students are employed or in graduate school by 2023 Increase annual size of incoming undergraduate class to 6,000 by 2023.

In addition to laying out goals, Cartwright shared how the university plans to achieve them. For example, in order to increase enrollment, Cartwright said the university plans to increase enrollment of transfer students. The university will accomplish that goal by developing new transfer scholarships and adding transfer coordinators in key markets.

“We need to make sure our strategies drive our budget and not the other way around,” Cartwright said, adding that it will be critical to hold people accountable.

UM System President Mun Choi said Thursday that the goals are ambitious, particularly in light of decreased funding from the state.

“This is in the midst of a very flat funding atmosphere,” Choi said.

Board Chairman David Steelman said accountability reports will be held to ensure each university is meeting its goals. He said it will be the first time curators have done that.
