Missouri’s annual veto session overlaps with special session

Legislators discussed several bills during the annual veto session on Wednesday.

The Joint Committee on Transportation Oversight approved a measure to rename four highways and bridges in honor of fallen service members and American heroes.

The committee also approved a measure for special license plates.

On Thursday, the Economic Development Committee will meet to discuss the STEM Education bill as part of the special session.

Sponsor Doug Libla, R-Poplar Bluff said he is hopeful the bill will get voted on by Friday.

He said the bill is very important to educate middle and high school students about computer sciences.

“We are one of, I think, six or eight states that aren’t teaching it for graduating credit,” he said.

Libla said teaching students could help fill jobs.

“It’s part of the workforce development the governor talks about so much,” he said.

I.T. experts spoke to house and senate committees.

Libla said the I.T. experts said training high school students computer science skills could allow the students to begin careers directly after graduation.
