Gun found on Mexico Middle School student

A Mexico Middle School student brought a stolen gun to school Wednesday.

School staff members saw the student acting suspiciously at about 2:17 p.m. and determined the eighth grader had a gun, the Mexico Department of Public Safety said in a news release. Officials took the gun and a school resource officer detained the student, who was taken to the police department without incident. The gun had been reported stolen in February, the police department said.

Police are trying to determine why the student brought the gun and trying to “ensure there is no additional risk to the schools,” the release said. Police have no information leading them to believe the student planned to use the gun, the department said.

Police turned the student over to juvenile officers on charges of unlawful use of a weapon and receiving stolen property.

The school sent home a letter to parents informing them about the incident.

“I take this incident seriously, as it puts our students at risk as well as directly violates our school safety policies,” superintendent Zach Templeton said in the letter.

Templeton also encouraged parents to talk to their children about the incident.
