Weekend rain to help alleviate drought problems

Farmers are finally catching a break when it comes to the drought, as the latest drought monitor shows significant improvements for the region. Just last week, roughly 15 percent of the state was experiencing extreme to exceptional drought conditions. Since then nearly 4 inches of rain has fallen in locations across Mid-Missouri, of which now only 6 percent of the state is experiencing extreme to exceptional drought conditions.

Some of the largest improvements have occurred right here in Mid-Missouri, with areas east of Hwy 63 falling out of the drought. Although more rain is expected as we head into the weekend, we won’t see complete reversal of the drought conditions. Mid-Missouri still needs upwards 6 inches of rain to alleviate all drought concerns, and that’s unlikely to happen this weekend.

While Mid-Missouri is preparing for heavy rain overnight Friday into Saturday, it’s likely that many spots won’t meet the criteria needed to rid the area of a drought. Current estimates have a large portion of the region seeing anywhere form 1-3 inches of rain with isolated spots picking up 4″+.
